How to pay in Malaysiawithout cash

The short answer

You can pay in Malaysia without cash by scanning DuitNow QR, the national QR standard run by PayNet. More than three million merchants accept it. With YouApp you verify once, top up a non-custodial wallet, then scan and pay in ringgit. Merchants are always paid in ringgit by licensed parties.

How do people pay without cash in Malaysia?

Most everyday payments now run through DuitNow QR. It is Malaysia's national QR standard, run by PayNet, and more than 3 million merchants accept it, from shopping malls to night market stalls. One code on the counter, one scan, done.

Cards work in larger shops. Cash still works nearly everywhere. QR is the one that reaches the smallest stalls, which is usually where the good food is.

Can a tourist go cashless in Malaysia?

Yes, with a verified account. YouApp is a verified-only app for travellers and locals. Verification is MyKad, a passport or Singpass plus a selfie liveness check, about two minutes, done once. A passport works for visitors from outside Malaysia.

You can browse YouApp without an account. To pay, you need to be verified, so finish the check before you land.

Cash, a card from home, or QR: what is the difference?

Each route asks something different of you before you can buy anything. The table compares what you need first and where each one actually works.

There is no single right answer. Most visitors end up carrying a little cash and paying for everything else by QR.

Is this an alternative to a money changer?

Not in the way you might expect. YouApp is not a currency exchange counter, does not quote exchange rates and will not hand you a stack of notes.

What it does is let you pay a Malaysian merchant in ringgit straight from your wallet balance, so you do not need the notes in the first place. That balance is held in MYRT, the Malaysia Ringgit Stablecoin, minted and redeemed 1:1 for ringgit with its reserve at a licensed Shariah-compliant fund.

How do I set it up?

Four steps. The first three are done once, and the last one is what you do at the counter.

  • Download YouApp and verify once with MyKad, a passport or Singpass plus a selfie liveness check.
  • Top up your non-custodial wallet with ERC-20 stablecoins on Ethereum mainnet, by DuitNow transfer, or with a debit or credit card. FPX is not supported.
  • Open the scanner, point it at any DuitNow QR, and check the amount in ringgit and the fee on screen.
  • Confirm. The merchant is paid in ringgit by licensed parties.

Does YouApp give me a card?

No. YouApp does not issue cards. There is nothing to carry and nothing to leave behind at a hotel. You pay by scanning a DuitNow QR with your phone.

A debit or credit card can be used to top up your wallet, with card processing up to 2%. The card is your own, issued by your own bank.

Can I pay for experiences and activities too?

Yes. Verified local hosts offer experiences on YouApp. Booking payments are held until the session is completed, then released to the host in ringgit less a 5% host fee.

Cashback in MYRT is available at partner merchants, hosts and activities only, and is funded by them. Cross-border QR payments are planned from 2027 and are not live, so this all applies inside Malaysia.
